What to Pack for a Trip to New Zealand from Dubai
Are you planning to travel to New Zealand and not sure from where to start? When people plan a trip to New Zealand, the very first thing pop-up in mind is what to pack for the trip. And the packing part becomes confusing because the weather there is completely different and it changes many times in a single day. Since New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are also opposite to the UAE, which means our summer is their winter. But before the suitcase, the first thing to sort out is the visa.
Packaging List for Trip to New Zealand

New Zealand Tourist Visa from Dubai
Now when its about the New Zealand visa from Dubai, it depends on your passport. UAE citizens and some other visa waiver nationalities do not need a full visa, they only need the NZeTA, which usually comes within 72 hours. But majority of the Dubai expats, like Indian, Pakistani, Filipino or Egyptian passport holders, need a proper Visitor Visa, which is applied online through Immigration New Zealand.
The current visa fee for most categories of arrivals from outside New Zealand is NZD 300 plus an NZD 41 immigration levy – with the addition that almost every visitor on a visa has to pay the International Visitor Levy of NZD 100. You will need a passport plus your UAE residence visa. Other than that, your account documents and confirmed flight and hotel reservations are also mandatory. Immigration New Zealand generally expects you to have somewhere equivalent to about NZD 1000 per month for the duration of your stay, or NZD 400 per month if you have already booked your accommodation for the time of your visit. The best thing you can do is to apply at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure as processing times can get extended – especially during peak season.

Clothes for Changing Weather
Let me tell you that New Zealand weather can surprise you, specially in the South Island. You can start the morning in sunshine in Queenstown and by afternoon it is raining with cold wind. So the best way is to pack in layers instead of carrying heavy items.
June to August is winter here. Queenstown and Mount Cook get all covered in snow sheets. Better to pack snow gloves, a beanie and a warm jacket. Summer is not a free pass though. Evenings by the lakes turn cool fast. So, pack your travel bag wisely – don’t just carry only T-shirts. Bring other light winter wear for layering.
-
Shoes and Biosecurity Rules
Here is something many UAE travellers miss. Did you know that New Zealand takes biosecurity very seriously? In other words, you can say it protects the country from pests and diseases. Be it your hiking shoes or camping gear – make sure to remove any dirt before you pack everything.
Food items like dates, spices, nuts, dried fruits and homemade snacks should be declared on your arrival card – or else you can get an instant fine of NZD 400. Declaring does not mean it will be taken away, so better to declare than hide.
-
Sun Protection and Health
Many people think that since New Zealand is cold, sunscreen is not needed, but the UV level there is very high because of thin ozone layer above that region. Carry sunscreen of SPF 50, sunglasses and a cap even in cool weather. If you take any regular medicines, keep them in original packing with a doctor prescription, along with basic tablets for headache and motion sickness.
-
Electronics and Driving
New Zealand uses the Type I plug, which is the same as Australia and different from the UK style Type G plug we use in Dubai, so carry a universal adapter. A power bank is a big plus point. Most UAE residents love self drive trips in New Zealand, so carry your valid driving licence, and if it is not in English, you will need an International Driving Permit or an approved translation. Also keep in mind that driving is on the left side of the road.
